Building the Future: SC United's Grassroots Soccer Program

At SC United Soccer Club, we're proud to announce the continuation and expansion of our comprehensive Grassroots Soccer Program, designed in alignment with the Ontario Soccer Association's standards and Canada Soccer's Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) model. This exciting initiative represents our commitment to nurturing young players and building a strong foundation for soccer in our community.

What is Grassroots Soccer?

Grassroots soccer is the foundation of our beautiful game. Guided by the Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) model, our programs prioritize skill acquisition, enjoyment, and inclusion over competition, ensuring every player has the opportunity to thrive. LTPD is about putting the player first and offering age-appropriate opportunities for kids to enjoy the game of soccer.

Ontario Soccer Association Standards

Our program strictly follows the regulations and guidelines established by the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA). Ontario Soccer collaborates closely with Canada Soccer to ensure our grassroots programs reflect national standards, promoting consistency and quality across the province. These standards ensure that young players across Ontario receive consistent, high-quality soccer experiences that prioritize their development and enjoyment.

Key features of our OSA-compliant program include:

Age-Appropriate Competition Formats

  • U4-U8: Small-sided games with modified rules

  • U9-U11: 7v7 format for enhanced player involvement

  • U12-U13: 9v9 format (starting Outdoor 2026 season) as per Canada Soccer's Grassroots Standards

Focus on Development Over Results

The guiding principle is that players of all ages and abilities should have the opportunity to enjoy the game of soccer and grow as participants and people. Our coaches are trained to prioritize individual player development, skill acquisition, and fun over winning at all costs.

The Long-Term Player Development Model

Long Term Player Development, also known as LTPD, is the Canadian Soccer Association model designed to optimize excellence and lifelong wellness through soccer. This scientifically-based approach ensures that players develop at appropriate stages throughout their soccer journey.

Our LTPD-based program focuses on:

  • Physical Development: Age-appropriate training that matches physical and mental development stages

  • Technical Skills: Fundamental ball skills, passing, shooting, and ball control

  • Tactical Understanding: Game awareness and decision-making abilities

  • Psychological Growth: Confidence, resilience, and love for the game

  • Social Development: Teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship

Benefits of Our Grassroots Program

For Young Players

Skill Development: The coaching objective here is simple: have them fall in love with the game. Players develop fundamental soccer skills in a fun, pressure-free environment that encourages creativity and experimentation.

Physical Fitness: Regular participation improves cardiovascular health, coordination, balance, and overall physical literacy that benefits players throughout their lives.

Social Connections: Soccer naturally builds friendships and teaches valuable life skills including teamwork, communication, and respect for others.

Mental Development: Players learn problem-solving, decision-making under pressure, and develop confidence that extends beyond the soccer field.

For Families

Community Building: Our program creates lasting connections between families, fostering a strong sense of community within SC United.

Life Skills: Making the game fun is key in teaching and coaching, so that players will continue in the game and may even coach or referee as they get older.

Long-term Pathway: Players who start in grassroots have clear development pathways within our club structure.

For Our Community

Youth Engagement: Providing positive recreational opportunities that keep young people active and engaged in their community.

Volunteer Development: Club administrators can be mentored in Leadership, Developing Capacity, Risk Management, Policy, Branding and more. Our program creates opportunities for parent volunteers to develop leadership and coaching skills.

Local Pride: A strong grassroots program builds community pride and establishes SC United as a cornerstone organization in our area.

Our Commitment to Excellence

Grassroots soccer is not about the number of trophies you win. It's about the difference you make to a young person's life. At SC United, we understand this fundamental truth and have structured our program accordingly.

Our qualified coaches receive ongoing training in LTPD principles and Ontario Soccer's best practices. Ontario Soccer provides practices for coaches to use to help make the game enjoyable for players U4-U12. We utilize these resources to ensure consistent, high-quality training sessions that keep players engaged and excited about soccer.

Looking Forward

As we continue and expand this exciting program, we're not just teaching soccer skills – we're building character, fostering friendships, and creating lifelong memories. Our Grassroots Soccer Program represents SC United's investment in the future of our sport and our community.

Whether your child is taking their first steps onto a soccer field or looking to develop their existing skills in a supportive environment, our Grassroots Program provides the perfect foundation for their soccer journey.
